Criminal legal aid reform

Summary

Deputies cited the High Court’s criticism of the reforms and called for urgent statements on how the Government would address the resulting problems.

Today the High Court delivered a damning judgment on the Minister for justice's criminal legal aid reform. "Grossly unfair", the judge said, and "demonstrably illogical". This is damning. We need statements and questions urgently in the Dáil to find out what the Government will do to sort out this chaos and crisis as soon as possible.

"Grossly unfair" and "demonstrably illogical". For four months we have raised the issue of the chaos that exists in our courts because of these attempts at reforms. It is sloppy work on the part of the Minister. We need statements and we need them fast. We need to know how a resolution will be achieved and how the Minister intends to bring this absolute farce of his own creation to an end. We need those statements this week.
